Overview
Daimler’s existing VIN Plate, VIN Sticker, and VIN Chassis Number verification process relies heavily on manual inspection during the Production and Quality Check stages. Operators manually verify VIN information against vehicle and MES data, making the process time-consuming and susceptible to human error. Manual documentation also creates challenges in traceability and makes it difficult to maintain consistent verification across different stages. The lack of seamless integration between the verification process and existing systems further increases the possibility of mismatches between the VIN information physically available on the truck and the corresponding MES records.
Daimler engaged Scanflow to digitize and automate VIN verification through an Android-based mobile application integrated with Scanflow SDKs, validating every scan directly against MES.
Business Challenge
- Manual VIN Verification Was Time-Consuming and Error-Prone Operators manually verified VIN information against vehicle and MES data, a process that took time and was susceptible to human error.
- Manual Documentation Limited Traceability Verification results captured on paper made it difficult to maintain a reliable, traceable record of what was checked at each stage.
- Inconsistent Verification Across Stages Without a standardized digital process, maintaining consistent verification across Production and Quality Check stages was difficult.
- No Seamless Integration with MES Increased Mismatch Risk The lack of integration between the manual verification process and existing systems increased the possibility of mismatches between the VIN information physically on the truck and the corresponding MES records.
The Scanflow Solution
Scanflow proposed a mobile verification application to digitize and automate the VIN verification process. The operator first scans the VSN barcode from the build card, then captures the VIN Plate/VIN Sticker or VIN Chassis Number. The captured information is securely sent to Daimler’s MES backend, where verification is performed against the corresponding vehicle data. The verified result is displayed in the mobile application, and operators can add notes in case of verification failure. The solution supports two primary use cases: VIN Plate/VIN Sticker Verification and VIN Chassis Number Verification.
- VSN Barcode ScanThe operator scans the VSN barcode from the build card, identifying the vehicle at the start of the workflow.
- VIN Plate / Sticker / Chassis CaptureThe operator captures the VIN Plate, VIN Sticker, or VIN Chassis Number, covering both supported use cases.
- MES-Backed VerificationCaptured VIN information is securely sent to Daimler’s MES backend, where it is verified against the corresponding vehicle data.
- Instant Result DisplayThe verification result is displayed directly in the mobile application at the point of inspection.
- Failure NotesIf verification fails, operators can add notes directly in the app, capturing context alongside the result.
Business Impact
By replacing manual VIN Plate, VIN Sticker, and VIN Chassis Number verification with a digital, MES-validated scan-and-capture workflow, Daimler gains a faster, more consistent, and more traceable verification process across Production and Quality Check stages.
Key Outcomes
- Fewer verification errors — digital capture and MES-backed validation replace manual comparison against vehicle data.
- Faster inspection — VSN scan and VIN/chassis capture replace manual matching at Production and QC.
- Consistent verification — the same digital workflow applies across every stage and use case.
- Full traceability — every result, along with any failure notes, is sent back to MES.
- Works without continuous connectivity — on-device reading supports offline scanning.
Delivery Footprint
- Rugged handheld mobile app used at Production and Quality Check
- Daimler’s MES/backend as the system of record — no separate Scanflow centralized database
Daimler strengthens VIN verification accuracy and traceability with Scanflow, giving operators a single mobile workflow to scan, verify, and record VIN data against MES at every stage.
Conclusion
Daimler’s VIN verification process is no longer dependent on manual cross-checks at Production and Quality Check. Operators now scan the VSN barcode to validate the truck model, capture the VIN Plate, Sticker, or Chassis Number, and get an MES-validated result instantly — even without continuous connectivity. The result is a faster, more consistent, and fully traceable verification process across every stage and use case.
